There are 50 great reasons to do this job

The East of England LGA is a politically-led, cross party organisation which works on behalf of the 50 local councils in the East of England to support them "to be the best that they can be for their communities”. It is a voluntary body and registered Employers’ Organisation, funded by a mixture of annual subscriptions and income derived from delivering commercial services.

The East of England is one of the most vibrant and economically active regions in the UK. We’re home to major transport hubs such as Stansted and Luton airports and two of the three busiest shipping container ports at Felixstowe and Tilbury. We’re in a strong position to attract investment, to nurture innovation from within and to support local entrepreneurs and businesses to flourish.

At the same time we face a complex set of challenges. There is a definite need for investment in our local infrastructure; demand for housing continues to outstrip supply; and it’s essential that we establish the right strategies to attract and retain the workforce required to support our local economies. All of this is set against the uncertainty of Brexit and the multi-faceted pressures on local government provision, such as the increasing demands on our social care resources.

The current Management Committee of EELGA is made up as follows:

  • Cllr David Finch, Leader of Essex County Council (Chairman of the East of England LGA and Conservative Group Leader)
  • Cllr Linda Haysey, Leader of East Herts Council (Vice-Chairman of the East of England LGA)
  • Mayor Dave Hodgson, Bedford Borough Council (Liberal Democrat Group Leader)
  • Cllr Alan Waters, Leader of Norwich City Council
  • Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen, Leader of Breckland District Council

Our full assembly of 50 Council Leaders meets twice a year: an ideal opportunity for political leaders in the region to network across the political spectrum and hear from Ministers and other policy makers on key issues.
